Scorers: Young(1*Try), Hall(2*pen)

The first of this season's Group 2 games eventually got underway in the Nutty Krust U18 Tournament under the floodlights at a very damp Chambers Park when Ballynahinch U18's and Rainey U18's played on Wednesday evening.

The Rainey U18 team recorded a closely contested 11-5 victory with the scoreboard having read 5-0 in their favour at the break. A sizeable crowd had gathered to watch an entertaining game which featured quite a few talented players on both teams. Among the group watching the game was Jonny Gillespie, the Ulster Rugby Talent ID Manager.

Rainey U18s Clinch Regional Title

Rainey U18s came away from Coleraine last Saturday with a 48-7 win to take the Ulster Carpets North U18 League title with a game in hand.  In excellent conditions for open rugby, they ran in 9 tries, including a hat-trick by outside centre Ryan Kearns, who also nailed 3 conversions for a personal score of 21 points.

Coleraine opened strongly through good work by their forwards, but a great run by fullback Padraig Totten took play deep into the home side’s territory.  Following a 5m penalty, prop Callum Smyth, playing out of position in the centre, opened the scoring when he crashed over to the right of the posts after captain Jack Macintosh was held up just short.

With two games left to play, Rainey OB U18s are in a virtually unassailable position atop the Ulster Carpets North U18 league.  Following their tight 12-10 win over Letterkenny on Saturday, they require just one point from their remaining two games to clinch the league title.  However, they made hard work of winning this game against a strong, highly-motivated Letterkenny side, having to twice come from behind to grab the points.
