Rainey U14s travelled to Judges Road in Derry looking to maintain their 100% league record and ended up doing do in some style.  With the sun shining one minute, and hailstones pelting down the next, they ran in seven tries and played some great rugby in the process.

While Rainey started slowly, all the early pressure came from City of Derry, but some great tackling from backrow fowards McGoldrick, Canavan and Thornton kept the Derry side at bay.  From a scrum on the Rainey 22’, out-half Steffan sent a great kick towards the Derry half, and when the ball bounced kindly for oncoming centre English, he fed it to his fellow centre, Rocks, who took his chance well and touched down under the posts.  Steffan added the extras.

Derry countered immediately with a try of their own, going through a number of phases with their forwards rumbling the ball up the pitch, but the conversion was missed.

Rainey piled on the pressure through some strong running and attacking play from wings Murray and Herron and Fullback Forbes, forcing the Derry side into numerous infringements.  Awarded a penalty for a clear high tackle. Rainey kicked for the corner and a great throw from O’Neill caught Prop Pitts at the front, who stormed over for Rainey’s second.

Rainey finished the half strongly and when scrum-half Gribben got quick ruck ball out wide, the ball was spread to flanker Canavan out in the backline, who ignored a two-man overlap and went over for Rainey’s 3rd try of the day. Seffan was successful with the conversion.

As the second half commenced, conditions worsened, resulting in handling errors from both teams.   After 15 mins of scrappy play, Rainey side broke away from their own 22 and when fullback Forbes joined the line in attack, he rounded the defenders and broke down the left touchline to score in the corner.

From the restart, No8 Thornton, who had been prominent in attack all day, caught a great ball and took a charge at the City of Derry defence.  Rainey went through a few phases, before being awarded a penalty and kicking for the corner.  In a straight replay of his first try, Pitts drove over for Rainey’s fifth touchdown.

Now it was all Rainey and when Thornton caught the restart, he set off across the park, before straightening to go around the Derry defenders and score under the posts.  Steffen was on the mark with the conversion once more. Flanker Canavan broke away again to score a final well worked try in the corner, before Rainey relaxed and City of Derry replied with a couple of consolation tries of their own.
