In Provincial 2, Rainey OB II chalked up another encouraging victory when they defeated Banbridge III 29 - 17 at Hatrick Park.  First-half tries from wing Moran, centre Devlin and back-row Lawrence, two of them converted by scrum-half Quinn, gave them a commanding interval lead.  They had further tries from prop Smyth and centre O'Neill, but Banbridge eventually got going to register two converted tries and a penalty.  This young Rainey side is worth watching.  Some of them are sure to play at a higher level in the not too distant future.

Peter Boyle has taken charge of the second XV who recently hammered CIYMS II in the league.  They lost a tight game 26-21 to InstoniansIIat Hatrick Park on Saturday after failing to turn possession into points in the early stages of a flowing encounter.  They gained control in the second half, but just ran out of time.  Try scorers were Mattie Miller, Bernie Mullan and Andrew Donaghy who was sin-binned in the first quarter.  Conversions were kicked by Wilson, Donaghy and Lloyd-Evans. This young squad has a lot of good players who will improve if they keep attending training.

In the Provincial League - Section 1, Rainey II defeated Bangor II by 25 - 20 under the Hatrick Park lights.  Bangor scored four of the seven tries, but lacked a place kicker.  Opening the score for Rainey was flanker Coyle who sampled rugby for the first time only a few weeks ago.  Out-half Murphy added the points.  Prop Nevin replied for Rainey when Bangor had shown what they could do, but Murphy landed a penalty to make it 15-5 at the break.  Another Murphy penalty saw Rainey well ahead, but two tries from Bangor altered the picture.  Rainey were able to breathe a little more easily when a driving maul gave hooker Trainor a try, but Bangor kept going to score again.

With Kukri Ulster Championship Division 1 sides handed a bye at the opening stage of the Towns' Cup, Rainey Old Boys II were not displeased when the draw paired them with Division 2 strugglers Donaghadee.  Many of the Rainey side have sampled rugby at a much higher level at some stage this season and, despite having to travel to Donaldson Park, were confident of winning.  And after dominating most of the game which was blown up five minutes early by referee Glenda Mellon, they ran out 49-11 winners.
